Endurance Starts in the Clinic: How Functional Medicine Supports Long-Distance Goals

“It’s not about the podium. It’s about getting your health — and your life — moving in the right direction.”

I’m a runner.

Not a fast one. Not a marathoner (yet). Not chasing medals. My goal isn’t to win a race — it’s to lower my LDL cholesterol, reclaim my health, and prove to myself and my family that change is possible.

I’ve been running consistently for about two months now. My next blood panel is coming up, and if the combination of daily miles, berberine, red rice yeast, and cutting out alcohol does what I hope it will, my numbers are going to reflect what my legs already know: I’m moving forward.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned from my own journey — and the hundreds of patients I’ve worked with — it’s this: endurance doesn’t just start with a workout plan. It starts in the clinic.

🧬 Why Gut, Hormones & Biomechanics Matter More Than You Think

Most runners focus on miles, pace, and maybe a little stretching. That’s fine… until you hit a plateau, get injured, or don’t see the results you expected.

That’s where functional medicine changes the game.

At Fuller Health Group, we look at:

Your gut: The single most overlooked factor in endurance. Dysbiosis in your small or large intestine can sap strength — especially in your quads — by creating systemic inflammation and nutrient deficiencies.✅ Your hormones: Cortisol, thyroid, and sex hormones all impact energy, recovery, and lean muscle maintenance.✅ Your gait: You can’t just analyze deficiencies in your movement. You have to correct them — and you can’t correct them without addressing why the dysfunction began in the first place. Often? It starts in the gut.

Weak quads, poor gait mechanics, recurring injuries… these aren’t random. They’re messages. And I’m trained to read them.

🏃 Why I Practice What I Preach

I’m living proof that this approach works. After years of inconsistent exercise, stress, and habits that weren’t serving me, I finally decided to get unstuck. To choose health. To put one foot in front of the other — literally and figuratively.

I stopped drinking.I supported my metabolism with targeted supplements.I ran… every day.

And my gait? I correct it as I go, because even the best intentions can’t outrun dysfunction. That’s why I pay as much attention to my gut microbiome as my mileage.

🔷 Endurance Isn’t a Race — It’s a Mindset

You don’t have to train like an elite athlete to deserve elite care. You don’t even have to “love running” (honestly, some days I don’t).You just have to decide: I’m not staying stuck.
